Wimbledon Order of Play Today: Day 2

Updated: 4 days ago

After a fantastic opening day at Wimbledon, which saw Carlos Alcaraz fight tooth and nail to avoid one of the biggest shocks in Wimbledon history, Day 2 gets under way with even more fantastic players taking to the Court.

*Reminder all matches from Court 2 onwards, play gets under way at 11am*

CENTRE COURT (1.30pm)

Barbora Krejcikova (CZE) *17 vs Alexandra Eala (PHI) – Last year’s champion starts her bid to retain her title against the runner up at Eastbourne last week. With Eala’s recent results and Krejcikova’s recent poor form, this match could go either way and will be a fantastic way to kick things off on centre court.

Arthur Rinderknech (FRA) vs Alexander Zverev (GER) *3 T/F 7/6(3) 6/7(8) 0/0 (Not before 2:30pm) – Like we mentioned yesterday, Wimbledon has never been a happy hunting ground for Zverev. Rinderknech’s powerful serve has been causing Zverev problems; combined with his inability to move well on grass, it’s hard to say whether Zverev will be able to come out on top.

Alexandre Muller (FRA) vs Novak Djokovic (SRB) *6 – 7-time champion Novak Djokovic begins his quest for a record equalling 8th Wimbledon title as he takes on France’s Alexandre Muller. After Alcaraz’s shaky opening match against Fognini, the reality of an 8th title may now seem all the more plausible to Djokovic. While Djokovic hasn’t played a match since the French Open, this is common practice in the lead up to the grass court season for him.

Dayana Yastremska (UKR) vs Coco Gauff (USA) *2 – The French Open champion has never made it past the 4th round at Wimbledon and her gras court season consisted of a first round exit to Xinyu Wang. Yastremska on the other hand, has had an extensive grass court season, playing in both Nottingham and Eastbourne, losing in the final at Nottingham. Could a potential upset be on the cards?

No.1 COURT (1pm)

Jannik Sinner (ITA) *1 vs Luca Nardi (ITA) – Desperate to get over the heartbreaking disappointment of his Roland Garros defeat to Alcaraz, Sinner takes to Court 1 to play fellow Italian Luca Nardi. At only 21, Nardi is a player for the future, but Sinner will likely have too much for him as he chases his first Wimbledon title.

Taylor Fritz (USA) *5 vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (FRA) T/F 6/7(6) 6/7(8) 6/4 7/6(6) 0/0 (Not before 2.30pm) – Well, it’s like we said. An absolute serving marathon. Both men have hit a combined 57 aces, and in his first service game Perricard broke the Wimbledon record for the fastest ever serve at the Championships (153mph). Thank God 5th sets now go to a tie break.

Petra Kvitova (CZE) vs Emma Navarro (USA) *10 – A cracking first round match sees two-time champion Petra Kvitova take on the talented Emma Navarro. While she was once a formidable grass court champion, Kvitova’s best days are long behind her, Navarro reached the quarter-finals last year and has shown goof acumen on grass.

Jack Draper (GBR) *4 vs Sebastian Baez (ARG) – It’s been a fantastic year on tour for Jack Draper, which has seen the British number 1 rise to 4th in the world. He will undoubtedly be the main attraction at Wimbledon today, but he has been handed a tough first round match against the dangerous Sebastian Baez. Draper has never looked particularly comfortable on grass, but I do expect him to get past the clay preferring Baez with relative ease.

No.2 COURT (11am)

Elisabetta Cocciaretto (ITA) vs Jessica Pegula (USA) *3 – Pegula picked up an impressive title win in Hamburg. She has shown impressive skills on grass and normally excels on tour but falls short at the slams. Could this year’s Wimbledon be her time?

Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) vs Lorenzo Musetti (ITA) *7 – Last year’s semi-finalist has shown himself to be one of the most exciting prospects in men’s tennis. Adept on all surfaces, and with one of the most beautiful backhands in the games, Musetti is a potential Grand Slam champion in my eyes. He has a tough match against the big hitting Basilashvili, but Musetti could well go deep into this year’s tournament.

Iga Swiatek (POL) *8 vs Polina Kudermetova – It’s been a tough year on tour for Iga Swiatek, which has seen her plummet down the world rankings. However, she is coming into Wimbledon on the back of some good form, reaching the final in Hamburg. Grass has never been her favourite service but she does seem to be improving on the surface each year.

Ben Shelton (USA) *10 vs Alex Bolt (AUS) – The big-serving Shelton takes to court 2 later today to right the perceived wrongs he has had at Wimbledon in the past. With the immense weapon that is his serve, you’d have thought Wimbledon would feel like home to Shelton. He has never looked particularly comfortable on grass, but I feel it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a serious problem on the surface.

No.3 COURT

Johannus Monday (GBR) vs Tommy Paul (USA) *13 – Paul has long been one of the most consistent players on tour, he takes on British Wildcard Johannus Monday as he looks to improve on his quarter-final from last year.

Mirra Andreeva *7 vs Mayar Sherif (EGY) – The hugely talented Mirra Andreeva starts her Wimbledon campaign as she looks to continue her rise through the ranks. Andreeva has a good serve, excellent backhand and has played a lot of doubles. She could be a serious contender for the title.

Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) *19 vs Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) – A true fan favourite who was once touted for so much more, Dimitrov reached the semi-finals in 2014 and has been a consistent performer on tour for the last few years. He has a tough first round match against the dogged Nishioka, but if he makes it past him, he could be a dangerous opponent for some of the higher seeds.

Elina Avanesyan (ARM) vs Elena Rybakina (KAZ) *11 – The 2022 champion and last year’s semi-finalist Rybakina gets underway looking to win back her title from three years ago. She is without doubt one of the best grass courters in the world and, despite her ranking, remains a serious contender.
