As Wimbledon 2025 gets under way today, let’s have a look at some of the standout matches of Wimbledon Day 1 and when they get under way.
*Reminder all matches from Court 2 onwards, play gets under way at 11am*
Centre Court (1.30pm)
F. Fognini (ITA) vs C. Alcaraz (ESP) *2 – The two-time defending champion gets his third Wimbledon title defence underway against seasoned pro Fabio Fognini. While he was once dangerous on clay, Fognini has never posed much danger on grass; expect Alcaraz to win with relative ease.
P. Badosa (ESP) *9 vs K. Boulter (GBR) – A very tough draw for the first of our Brits, Badosa has one of the best forehands in the game and recently had her best-ever performance at a Grand Slam in Australia. However, Badosa has had a poor grass court season and picked up an injury in Berlin; I believe Boulter may cause the upset.
A. Rinderkneck vs A. Zverev (GER) *3 – Destined to be another year without a Grand Slam? It’s been another tough year for Zverev in terms of winning slams, and Wimbledon doesn’t look like it will solve that problem. Despite his big serve, Zverev has never made it past the fourth round of Wimbledon. While he’ll make quick work of his first-round opponent, I don’t see him winning the Wimbledon title any time soon.
Court 1 (1pm)
A. Sabalenka *1 vs C. Brastine (CAN) – Sabalenka will be desperate to get her hands on the Wimbledon title, having gone majorless so far this season. A first meeting between herself and Brastine, who defeated former Grand Slam Bianca Andreescu to get through qualifying. Sabalenka should win and is a strong favourite for the title.
J. Fearnley (GBR) vs J. Fonseca (BRA) – Our match of the day sees Jacob Fearnley take on the massively talented Joao Fonseca. This match should be a cracker with Fernley’s consistency put to the test against one of the most ruthless hitters on tour. Fonseca is still very raw and is new to grass, so I side slightly with Fearnley, but it should be a real treat for all those on Court 1.
E. Raducanu (GBR) vs M. Xu (GBR) – Emma Raducanu returns to Wimbledon in an all-British clash against 17-year-old Mingge Xu. This is a fantastic opportunity for Xu to play on court 1 against one of the stars of British tennis; it’ll be fascinating to see what she can do!
Court 2 (11am)
B. Bonzi (FRA) vs D. Medvedev *9 - Our underdog pick for the tournament Daniil Medvedev kicks off proceedings on the first of Wimbledon's outside courts. Medvedev has made the Wimbledon semi-finals two years running and is a fierce grass court player. He has played Benjamin Bonzi before, losing at Roland Garros in 2017, but this if their first meeting in eight years.
E. Ruse (ROU) vs Madison Keys (USA) *6 – The Australian Open Champion gets her Wimbledon underway, hoping that her big-hitting style will translate nicely to the grass.
J. Paolini (ITA) *4 vs A. Sevastova (LAT) – Last year’s finalist, Paolini, gets her Wimbledon campaign up and running, hoping to go one step further than in 2024.
T. Fritz (USA) *5 vs G. Mpetishi Perricard (FRA) – If one thing’s for certain about this match, it’s that there are going to be a lot of aces. Both players possess one of the best serves on tour; expect both to cruise into double figures for aces and touch the 140 mph mark on multiple occasions.
Court 3
S. Kartal (GBR) vs *J. Ostapenko (LAT) 20 – With all the focus on Boulter and Raducanu, some may have forgotten about Sonay Kartal, who has managed to get herself into the top 50 of the WTA rankings. Her opponent is former Roland Garros champion and Wimbledon semi-finalist Ostapenko. Could be another cracker.
H. Rune (DEN) *8 vs N. Jarry (CHI) – There's real potential that this could be an excellent match-up. Rune, despite his ranking, is vulnerable on grass, and Jarry looked excellent in qualifying.
M. Berrettini (ITA) *32 vs K. Majchrzak (POL) – Berrettini is a former finalist at Wimbledon and an exceptional grass court player; he could be a real dark horse at this year’s tournament.
K. Siniakova (CZE) vs Q. Zheng (CHN) *5 – The star of Chinese tennis gets underway today. Zheng has never had much fun at Wimbledon but possesses one of the best serves on tour, so she has the potential to be dangerous.
