With Wimbledon upon us, but British hopes sadly diminished with the last minute withdrawal of Sir Andy Murray, we can at least look forward to seeing the likes of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokavic, Marin Cilic, Kevin Anderson and Juan Martin del Potro all lining up in round one, alongside the maverick Nick Kyrgios and the suitably named Tennys Sandgren, not to mention the handful of British hopefuls. Among the many mouth-watering ties to look forward to over the coming fortnight, the all French meeting of Monfils v Gasquet will be one for the purist, whilst the heavyweight clash of Wawrinka v Dimitrov will be worth seeing. On the ladies’ side, along with the various British entries, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber, Venus Williams, Sloane Stephena and Madison Keys will all be fancying their chances, but write off Serena Williams at your peril, and Sharapova remains a threat in the top half of the draw. It’s rarely without its upsets and surprises, and with the weather set fair, this year’s Wimbledon Championships could be scorcher. Let the games begin.
