With virtually every recent ATP and WTA tennis tournament having fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic, tennis is finally beginning to emerge from the darkness. Although this year’s Wimbledon sadly also appeared on that casualty list for the first time since 1945, the US Open is under way in New York, albeit in a biospheric bubble containing nearly a thousand players, coaches, physios and officials, but no spectators. All involved are obliged to exist under a restrictive regime of endless Covid testing and strict protocols, any breaching of which will result in expulsion from the bubble and the tournament.
It may just be a first tentative step towards normality, with the postponed French Open to follow a month later. However, Wimbledon 2021 tickets and Wimbledon debentures are up for grabs, as it is hoped that by next summer things will have quietened down sufficiently for a return of the greatest tournament of them all.
