Serena Williams dropping out of Roland Garros – will this affect her chances at Wimbledon?

This year’s French Open at Roland Garros served up its usual mixture of style, long rallies and shock results, but a major talking point was Serena “Supermum” Williams coming dressed in the guise of a Marvel  super-hero for her return to Grand Slam tennis following the birth of her daughter Alexis in September 2017. However, as Serena later explained, her Lycra bodysuit, which recalled the controversial catsuit briefly worn at Wimbledon by Anne White in 1985, was not purely sartorial in purpose, but also improves her circulation. Sadly we were denied a potentially explosive, and noisy, 4th round encounter between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova when  Serena was forced to withdraw through injury, sustained whilst competing in the doubles with her sister, Venus.

Sadly for Williams, her injured right pectoral muscle left her unable to serve without intense pain and leaves her participation at Wimbledon 2018 highly doubtful. Even if she does make it to the starting line, her lack of match practice over the last year of so would mean adding to her seven Wimbledon singles titles would be a superhuman achievement, but, dressed like that, who would bet against her?
